"Organizations, guilds, societies, and associations are the certifying bodies that many trainers associate with. They also represent possible communities of affiliation through which folks learn of and meet other like-minded hypnotists.

"Some organizations are exclusive and focus on membership of only folks who meet certain narrow qualifications or professional training (such as the 'licensed professional' ones) and others widen their membership but keep their focus on a narrow band of context (such as hypnotherapist-only or metaphysical-only or entertainment-only) while others are set up to be inclusive and endeavor to include a wide variety of hypnotists who work in very different contexts (such as hypnotherapy and metaphysical and entertainment and even a number of forms of recreational hypnosis).

"While many folks first join a particular organization primarily based upon their trainer's associations, eventually they will begin looking around at the various organizations to decide which group has the resources they feel they need or represents the sort of mission statement or community of folks they would like to be associated with.

"Despite misimpressions, certifications from most organizations have no actual legal status and are merely testaments that one has qualified to join a private society - whether the standards to qualify are rigorous or not depends upon the organizational mandate and the rigor of the instructors. In the end, certification is pretty much membership in a hypnosis club. There is an impression among many that certification is required to be considered a 'professional' hypnotist and whether or not this is a good idea or not, it is incorrect. Of course, be that as it may, some organizations are genuinely wonderful communities to belong to."
